About

Inside a 900-year old temple complex in Pashan, a suburb in the northwest region of Pune, visitors can find 12 more tiny temples. The Someshwar Temple grounds contain these model replicas of Jyotirlinga temples.

Jyotirlinga are revered shrines in Hinduism. They are dedicated to the deity Shiva. The twelve Jyotirlinga temples modeled in the miniatures are located across India and hold immense religious importance in Hinduism. The replicas have been intricately designed and arranged within an open air gallery decorated with a mural of the Himalayas.

The Someshwar Temple itself is also steeped in local legend. The story takes place about 700 years ago. A cow was said to spray its milk over a snake hole in the forest. Curious, the caretaker of the cattle went to the hole. That night, Lord Shiva appeared in the man's dreams, asking him to dig up the spot. When he did, he found a Shiva Lingam—a representation of the god Shiva—buried beneath, making it a sacred spot.

Since the 1980s, the temple grounds have undergone multiple renovations, including the addition of the Jyotirlinga temple replicas.
